The Harris County - Houston Sports Authority
The Harris County - Houston Sports Authority is a government agency that maintains and oversees the bond debt service on the professional sports stadiums, as well as assists with the sports marketing for the destination.
Houston Sports completed its initial project on Opening Day for the downtown baseball park, Minute Maid Park, on March 30, 2000, on time and under budget.
The authority began its second project with the groundbreaking for NRG Stadium (formerly known as Reliant Stadium) in March 2000, and the stadium was officially opened on August 24, 2002.
The third project, the downtown Toyota Center and Tundra Garage, broke ground on July 31, 2001, and opened its doors on October 6, 2003.
BBVA Compass Stadium recently completed Houston’s professional stadium landscape and was the first soccer specific stadium to be built in a downtown area. The stadium broke ground on February 5, 2011 and opened its doors on May 12, 2012.
