The Nature Discovery Center will again take part in the Great Backyard Bird Count. Join us on Monday, Feb. 18, 2019 from 9:00 to 10:30 am for the count here at the Nature Discovery Center.  Families are welcome.  Registration is not required. We will meet at the front porch of the Nature Discovery Center.  If you are a little late, just find us in the park.

Bring a pair of binoculars, but if you don’t have any, we have some here you can borrow.  Please call or e-mail Mary Annahead of time so we can have a pair ready for you.

Bird watchers from around the world will take part in this annual event sometime between Friday, February 16, through Monday, February 18, 2019. Participants in the free event will join tens of thousands of volunteers of all levels of birding experience to count birds in their own backyards, local parks or wildlife refuges.

Checklists submitted by all “citizen scientists” help scientists and researchers learn more about how different bird species are doing, how their populations and ranges are changing, and how to protect them. The 2018 record breaking GBBC turned in 180,027 checklists from an estimated 192,456  participants in more than 130 countries.  Even more amazing is that bird watchers reported 6,460 species and 28,810,828 individual birds!  657 species were recorded in the United States. Worldwide, Columbia recorded the greatest number of species in 2018 with a whopping 1,046 species. Visit http://gbbc.birdcount.org/ to learn more about the count and to explore the results and check out species distribution, or shifts in abundance by looking at the maps and lists in their “Explore Data” section.
