ABOUT THE BEEKEEPER: Hi my name is Matthew Kane & I started beekeeping several years ago. When I had just one hive, I found I had a real knack for beekeeping & began to expand my knowledge quickly through many textbooks, along with apprenticing under a master beekeeper at an apiary (bee farm), where I cared for over 200 hives.

I currently have 30+ hives of my own & love nothing more than teaching others about the wonderful lives of bees!! Along with traveling to schools, I also showcase my observation beehive at a family fun park in Conroe.

WHERE DID "THE MAD BEEKEEPER" NAME COME FROM? I have my mentor & Alice in Wonderland's Mad Hatter character to thank for the inspiration of the name. My mentor shared a story with me during my second year of apprenticeship. He was speaking to a customer while selling honey at a local craft show, the customer asked "So, you actually have BEES!?! Are you crazy or something??? " my mentor replied "Well sir, I always say, you do have to be just a little bit mad to force your way into a box full of tens of thousands of stinging insects and actually ENJOY yourself ".

During the educational show - children will learn:
*The responsibilities of a beekeeper, what we do month to month, how we extract honey, etc.
*The daily life inside of a beehive.
*The difference between the queen, worker bees, & drones (male bee) etc.
*The various jobs of the worker bees and the queen.
*How honey is made.
*Biology of the honey bee, proboscis (straw like tongue), honey stomach, stinger & how it works. (depending on the age group of the children)
*How wax is produced..
*Involve the children in multiple question/answer opportunities
*Hands on learning through touching & smelling an actual piece of honeycomb
(illustrating the difference between comb that has & hasn't had honey in it).
*Will demonstrate the various tools a beekeeper needs to get through an average day.
*Plus more.
