The Nature Discovery Center is excited to take part in the 20th Annual Great Backyard Bird Count!
Bird watchers from around the world will take part in this annual event between Friday, February 17, and Monday, February 20, 2017. Participants in the free event will join tens of thousands of volunteers of all levels of birding experience to count birds in their own backyards, local parks or wildlife refuges.
Join us on Monday, Feb. 20, 2017 from 9:00 to 10:30 am for the count here at the Center. We will meet at the front porch of the Nature Discovery Center. If you are a little late, just find us in the park. Families are welcome. Registration is not required.
Bring a pair of binoculars, but if you don’t have any, we have some here to borrow. Please call or email Mary Ann ahead of time so we can have a pair ready for you. (mbeauch@naturediscoverycenter.org)
Checklists submitted by all "citizen scientists" help scientists and researchers learn more about how different bird species are doing, how their populations and ranges are changing, and how to protect them. The 2016 record breaking GBBC turned in more than 162,052 checklists from an estimated 163,763 participants in more than 130 countries. Even more amazing is that bird watchers reported 5,689 species--passing 2015 records by a massive 599 species and topping 50% of the world's birds for the first time! 665 species were recorded in the United States.
